Competence Assessment Programme

The Wesley Institute of Nursing Education Competence Assessment Programme (CAP) is accredited by the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ). This is a six week course consisting of 85 hours of in class theory and 160 hours of clinical experience in placements across NZ. Nurses will be assessed on-site through a combination of written assignments, assessing their skill at clinical assessments, care planning, pathophysiology, reflective practice, as well as assessment of their team management and key clinical skills. The Wesley Institute of Nursing Education CAP course is a supportive programme which provides internationally qualified nurses a comprehensive overview of nursing in New Zealand. This course offers the best opportunity to understand and achieve the NCNZ competencies for Registered Nurses.

Combined OET results may be considered, within 12 months apart.

Any cost incurred for this assessment must be met by the candidate.
Registered Nurse Course Fees Include:
Total: NZ $ 9,245.00 (GST included)
Enrolled Nurse Course Fees Include:
Total: NZ $ 8,245.00 (GST included)

Registered Nurses and Enrolled Nurses are also expected to have indemnity insurance cover before commencing nursing practice experience as a student. NZ Nurses Organisation (NZNO) has student membership available. Refer to their fees here: NZNO member fees. This is compulsory and must be paid online prior to the start of CAP.

Please note: These fees apply to all students, domestic or international, regardless of NZ residency/immigration status.

The Wesley Institute of Nursing CAP Course runs across three main regions:

Theory classes are held on campuses in the main centres of each region:

Theory week covers the first six days of the programme (Friday – Friday) and requires compulsory attendance in person.

Following theory week, classes are held in person every Wednesday. Students who are placed outside of our main centres will attend theory classes online.

The CAP clinical placement starts in the second week of the programme.

Wesley Institute has Nursing Council-approved placements in facilities throughout New Zealand; the regions you will be sent for clinical placements are listed below.

Clinical placements run for 5 weeks totalling 160 hours of clinical shifts.

Most of the clinical placements are in approved Oceania Healthcare facilities in New Zealand both on the North Island and South Island.

Please note that placements in all regions are limited, so there is no ability to choose where you want to go. We must place you where there are vacancies in practice and accounting for the availability of NZRN preceptors.
